MeadowWood Behavioral Health System’s Medical Director Honored with Award

NEW CASTLE, Del. – (June 2, 2010)MeadowWood Behavioral Health System, a Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) facility, is pleased to announce that Dr. Ranga N. Ram has been awarded the 2010 Exemplary Public Sector Psychiatrist Award by the Indo-American Psychiatric Association (IAPA).

“Dr. Ram has devoted his career to caring for the mental health needs of some of the most under-served members of our communities,” said Bill Mason, chief executive officer of MeadowWood Behavioral Health. “He began his career in Madurai, India, and his dedication there helped lay the groundwork for reforming the country’s Primary Health Care system to address the mental health needs of the elderly. We are fortunate to have him as our medical director.”

After leaving India, Ram trained at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, held a joint faculty appointment at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University and became the first medical director of the State of Delaware’s Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health. He currently serves as the medical director at MeadowWood.

Over the past five years, Ram has taken on a greater advocacy role in his professional life. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Delaware’s National Alliance on Mental Illness organization. He also works closely with No Kidding, Me Too (NKM2), an organization dedicated to eradicating the stigma often associated with mental health issues.

Ram has been a member of IAPA since 2004. The organization is for psychiatrists of Asian-Indian origin to help meet the mental health needs of the Indo-American community.
